Gogiites Spotlight

We are excited to chat with Miriam Gibson a Designer/Producer at Gogii Games to find out more about her role and her experience working in tech, specifically gaming.

Question: How long have you worked at Gogii?

Miriam G: Since the opening of our Halifax studio in 2017!

Question: What do you primarily do in your role?

Miriam G: Design features based on data and benchmarking. Organize and maintain the production pipeline. My current project is Virtual Families Cookoff. Currently we are working towards having a constant and consistent event schedule, which has its obstacles but has been very fun to work on!

Question: What do you love about your role?

Miriam G: I get to constantly look for innovative ways to make games more fun and engaging.

Question: Who are the people/teams that you get to interact with to get your work done?

Miriam G: I get to work with artists, developers, QA, and game designers working int the Cookoff project

Question: What do you like about working at Gogii?

Miriam G: I find my work very interesting, and I get to do something new everyday. I like the balance of autonomy and structure. I feel like I can talk about any issue and will be listened to. If there is something that is relevant to the industry that interests me, I am supported in exploring that as well.

Question: How has working remotely impacted your work.

Miriam G: At first the switch to remote was difficult, but as I get used to it I feel I can concentrate more easily and set aside time to focus. Communicating is different, but I really like how remote work has brought the two offices together.

Question: When you were a kid, what did you dream of doing when "you grew up"?

Miriam G: At one point I wanted to be a paleontologist. Also, an artist, which is what I went to university for. Ya never know where you'll end up!

March is an exciting time because we get to celebrate International Women’s Day!

Question: Did you think that you would have a career in gaming?

Miriam G: No, it didn’t even occur to me that tech (gaming) was a thing I could do. It wasn’t an industry that I was exposed to growing up. I thought I would be a digital 3D artist.

Question: How do you stay connected with other women in tech?

Miriam G: We have a mentorship program at Gogii that I participate in with students from Dalhousie University. I also have a lot of friends working in gaming. We talk about the industry; Halifax has several affinity groups to support people that are not the majority. I want to help other women connect - I’ve gotten to a place where I can “pay it forward” I count myself lucky to be in this industry.

Question: Do you have any advice for women considering a career in gaming?

Miriam G: Don’t doubt yourself, you have the skills to do it. It’s ok, if you have doubts but don’t let that stop you. There is a misconception that people in tech are not warm/welcoming but most people you meet want you to succeed, there are a lot of people on your side.

Question: Are there any other thoughts you would like to share?

Miriam G: Anything is possible, but there is still work to do. Many people have worked hard to get women to this place. I am the beneficiary of that and I want to continue to do my part to support women in tech.

Miriam, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! Learn more about Gogii and the opportunities we currently have here!
